Waste Reduction

While tossing a glass bottle or aluminum can into a garbage can instead of a recycling bin may seem irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, imagine if each of the 3 million visitors that attend events at Xcel Energy Center and Saint Paul RiverCentre each year didn’t have access to recycling bins! That would be a lot of waste and a detriment to our environment. Waste reduction is of high priority at these venues. In fact, the recycling program was the first sustainability program started in these facilities and boy did it make a difference! It’s easy to walk around and spot the recycling and composting bins in these buildings, but a lot more happens behind the scenes. Over 12 different types of items are recycled on a daily basis including cans, bottles, paper, compost, pallets, shrink wrap, kitchen grease, electronics and more. In 2009, the recycling rate in these venues was at just 15% of the total waste generated. By 2014, the rate increased to 60% due to changes in bins, processes, purchasing and education. The Science Museum of Minnesota completed an in-depth waste study in 2012 revealed that only 18 percent of the more than 500,000 pounds of garbage produced annually by the museum was being recovered. Since then, a museum-wide waste management and recycling education program combined with the placement of numerous standardized recycling and composting containers with uniform labeling in convenient locations throughout the museum has resulted in waste recovery climbing nearly fourfold to 75 percent.
